While watching a video on making around neck, I noticed that the instructor could put her center neck stitches on hold by pressing s button so the stitches on each side wouldn’t knit. The she could then put the stitches on waste yarn. She was using a brother machine. Is there a way to set the studio so you could do the same thing, I have tried putting the stitches on hold on each side but it doesn’t work very well.

Margaret,
I'm not sure exactly the technique you are referring to.
If you want to prevent needles from knitting and not use hold, use slip (Check your manual for YOUR slip settings)
Try this on a swatch. Using slip to "hold" is an interesting technique that many of us forget.
