Hi Jeri!
Ah ... those terms! Sport weight, worsted, fingering, 4-ply, 8-ply ... who knows what they really mean? 😊
Even with today's "standards", compare two #2 yarns and they can be very different.
1. Is the pattern for a sweater? Can you use YOUR gauge and substitute a Knit it Now pattern?
2. What about using math to convert the pattern instructions to your gauge?

As the terms for knitting yarns drive me nuts (!) I've decided to keep track of Wraps Per Inch - WPI - for every yarn that I use. That way I can compare the new yarn to one I've already used and I have a starting point for doing my samples and gauge swatches. I keep track on an excel spreadsheet too. It has dialed down the frustration quite a bit. I wrap the yarn gently around a little ruler and just let the strands fall together without pulling or pushing and count until I reach an inch. Hope this helps someone else 🙂

Hi Ann-Blaire!
I'm so glad you found a system that works for you. I really believe that consistency is the key (and writing things down)
For those who don't know about WPI here's a tutorial.
