Archive of Thread: Buying Yarn and Swatching Back

Ok, so I know I'm supposed to swatch before I start a project so that I know how much yarn I need. But I also know that I'm supposed to buy yarn all from the same lot and die color. If I don't know how much yarn I need before I buy the yarn how am I supposed to buy the yarn so that I can do the swatch?  Do I just buy a small amount to swatch and then hope the rest turns out the same?  Does yarn vary that much between skeins?

I have been pondering that question for ages....what if I see some beautiful wool as I am out and about.  I have found that the sales people in such shops are pretty good at guesstimates if you have an idea of style and size.
