how to do neck decreases with a G carriage?

The manual shows to transfer the outer stitch to its neighbour, then pull the yarn through but to me that looks as if you knit that outer stitch twice when you do the next row.

 

I wonder whether I can just pull the outer stitch through its neighbour, or would that make the V neck too tight?
