I've seen lots of instructionals on using Intarsia on the main bed. Is it possible to do it using the ribber? I'd like to make a hat--and I don't want to use mock ribbing.

Any suggestions?

Hi Rachel,
I don't see why you couldn't do intarsia on the ribber. Picture knitting blocks of color while knitting knit and purl stitches by hand.

It would be similar to knitting intarsia on a manual machine (no intarsia carriage). The difference would be that you have ribber needles in work

Intarsia with a Manual Machine | Machine Knitting Tutorial (knititnow.com)

Let's say your hat is 60 stitches and you are knitting in 1x1 rib You want a block of red color in the middle

Row 1:
  • Carriage on the right
  • Put 40 stitches in hold opposite the carriage, knit 20 stitches in white
  • free pass the carriage back to the right
  • Put the first 20 stitches in hold, put the center 20 stitches into working position
  • Knit the center 20 stitches in red
  • free pass the carriage back to the right.
  • Put the red stitches in hold, put the remaining 20 stitches into work
  • Knit the remaining 20 stitches in white

Row 2:
  • Repeat the steps above, knitting 2 blocks of white on the edges and the center in red
That's a lot of starting and stopping, but it's possible.
The key to success is to twist the yarns between the blocks so you don't have holes

Does that make sense?
