Archive of Thread: Calculating yarn needed seems backwards Back

I understand the process of calculating yarn, but last night I got to thinking. Now, maybe last night I was not remembering correctly, but keep with me here.

You have to do your swatch and create your pattern BEFORE you can figure out how much yarn to buy. 

But, you need the yarn to create your swatch. It is like the chicken and the egg. How can you calculate the yarn needed before you make your swatch which gives you the numbers needed for the calculation, which is done before you create your pattern, which gives you the dimensions to use when calculating?

Am I missing something here? 🙄
