Hi, I would like to make socks with a decorative pattern stitch for the leg. How do i figure out how to match the gauge that I'm using for the foot in order to have the leg the right size?

Hi Linda!

I would build my sock pattern at both gauges to calculate the stitches needed.

Let's say your leg needs 65 stitches to be the right size and your foot needs to be 60 stitches

If you are knitting from the cuff down, you would cast on 65 stitches and knit the leg in pattern

When it's time to knit the foot, decrease 5 stitches and continue at in the foot stitch pattern

Make sense?

Ok, that makes sense. Thank you! I was trying to knit the one that starts with the heel. I think cuff down will work better. I need to practice doing swatches with patterning & use the little rulers.

The logic is the same.  Build the pattern twice and use the instructions for the different gauges for the different sections as needed.
Reduce or increase stitches as needed
