A knitter requested a pattern for a pony tail hat.

I have sons and I've always had short hair, I'm guess that this would work.

  • Knit a Basic Hat 1-2 inches shorter than the desired length
  • End with a reverse hung hem
  • Gather the top with 1/4" elastic in the hem, leaving an opening for the ponytail.
~or~
Knit it upside-down
  • Start with a small hem
  • Knit the body of the hat and ribbing (or hem or let it roll)

Thoughts?

I would do 1 or 2 decrease rows/rounds b4 binding off. That will hug the head versus having to gather the top.

@Deb Knight  that  makes sense!

So basically we are leaving a hole for the pony? I'm guessing she would secure her pony with a band and not rely on the hat to hold it in place?

That is exactly it!

I was thinking about making a Ponytail Hat but finishing with eyelets.  Then making an I-cord to run through the eyelets, tighten up the top hat to make the ponytail hole the size I want and tie a knot with the cord.  These hats also are called a Bun Hats.

Thank you @Cherie Smiley!

In our last live meeting Jenny suggested this as an embelishment at the top of a hat instead of a pompom.

But the idea works for a Messy Bun hat, Bun Hat, or Ponytail hat too!
