If I try to pick up a dropped stitch I end up dropping about 4 more off the adjoining needles. I admit I am not dexterous. Any tips for avoiding this - apart from getting a re-boot of brain-hand coordination?

How about putting a few adjacent needles each side to Holding Position before you attempt the pickup.

Another trick is to hang transfer tools in the hooks of the adjacent needles.  The stitches are less likely to drop off.

Thank you both, very much. Those ideas are less extreme than the solution I came up with over lunch - take the whole lot off the machine, lay flat, fix, put back on the machine. I'll try your ideas first!
