Hi can someone help me with the above please 
if I want to knit with thicker yarn using every other needle woul I cast on the same amount of stitches or do you have to cast on extra ?

Hi Roz
You need to knit a tension swatch first, with every other needle, and yes I would think you will probably need to cast on extra stitches (I haven't tried this yet...)

"same amount of stitches" as ????

When measuring your swatch and calculating your gauge, remember you are counting STITCHES not needles. 
The machine doesn't know (or care) if you use every needle, every other or every 3rd  NEEDLE. ðŸ˜Š What's important is to measure the stitches, so you can determine how many stitches to cast on and get the width you need.
