Similar to , knitters can isolate a stitch pattern in a specific section of knitting, surrounded by plain knitting.

The motif is created by punchcard or electronics, but it is not repeated across the entire needlebed.

Different brands of machines have different methods of creating single motif designs. Brother machines use the SM setting on the change knob along with plastic bars on the needlbed.
Silver/Singer machines have "Magic Cams" and Point Cams to create single motifs.
