Harvard Square Pullover
Through the Eyes of a Machine Knitter
Stitch Pattern
This pattern caught my eye because of the texture on the sleeves and underarm I immediately thought, "We can knit this on the mahine!"Looking closely and reading the pattern, you can see that the "purl" columns of the 2x2 rib is really garter stitch (purl bumps on both side).
From the pattern:
Broken Rib (worked over a multiple of 4 sts + 2 additional sts)
Row 1 (RS): P2, *k2, p2 rep from * to end of row.
Row 2: Purl.
Row 1 (RS): P2, *k2, p2 rep from * to end of row.
Row 2: Purl.
As machine knitters, it would be EXTREMELY tedious to transfer every 3rd and 4th stitch to the ribber every other row .... Yikes!
An option is to use a slipped rib. Elongating the columns of "knit" stitches accents the "purl" columns between without any reforming or transferring stitches.
We suggest substituting the Slipped Rib Pattern from the Knit it Now Stitch Library.
Sweater Design
Notice how the "broken rib" is added to the underarms and is carried up along the sleeve seam to the shoulder.Clever! and such a great design element.
Even though the original pattern is a set in sleeve, IMHO the knitting would be easier with a Dropped Shoulder or Square Armhole.
Don't forget: You can use this design inspiration and substitute any Knit it Now pattern with ANY yarn and use ANY machine!
