Japanese Notation (Traditional)

Traditional Japanese garment notation shows abbreviated shaping on a schematic of your piece — for increases, decreases, or short-row shaping.
Numbers are written in three parts: stitches – rows – times. For example, 1-2-9 means work the shaping action (decrease, increase, or hold) on 1 stitch, every 2 rows, 9 times. If the diagram does not spell out increase or decrease, read the schematic — the taper shows whether stitches are added or removed.
Knit It Now has adapted this traditional notation system into a more knitter-friendly shaping format with row-by-row instructions built directly into the chart.
