Bright stripes turn a basic pair of socks into something completely different, without complicated color changes, yarn ends or patterning.

The original Teenage Kicks Socks, designed by Stacey Winklepleck for Knit Picks, is a hand-knitting pattern worked from the top down. We’ll use it as inspiration and create our own custom machine-knit version with the Knit It Now Sock Pattern Builder.

Why This Works for Machine Knitting

There is no stripe chart to follow. The yarn creates the color changes while you knit.

Choose a self-striping sock yarn, knit a plain stockinette sock, and let the changing colors become the design.

Make It Your Own

Use the Basic Socks Pattern Builder to create instructions for your foot size, yarn, gauge, preferred cuff depth, and desired leg length.

  • Choose Cuff to Toe or Toe Up construction
  • Knit a simple ribbed cuff
  • Make the leg approximately mid-calf length
  • Use a self-striping fingering-weight sock yarn
  • Match the beginning of the color sequence if you want the socks to look alike

The original inspiration is knitted from the top down, but your Knit It Now pattern can be created either Cuff to Toe or Toe Up. Choose the construction you prefer.
