Plating (also called plaiting or platting) is the process where 2 different yarns are knitted together. It is more than running 2 ends together, the machine separates the strands so one strand appears on the knit side and the other strand appears on the purl side of the knitting.
Why use Plating?
- Knit reversible fabric with 2 different kind of yarn. Consider using different colors and/or textures.
- Give body to thin, wimpy yarn. Combine the thin yarn or plait it with a more substantial yarn.
- Reinforce heels, knees, elbows
- Create unusual fabrics mixing plating with tuck
