- Cast on 20 stitches with any method
- Hang some weight
- Knit a few rows
NOTE: Throughout these exercises the Russel Levers are NOT engaged.
Exercise #1 - Basic Slip
- Arrange every other needle (EON) to "D" position
- Carriage on the right, engage BOTH Side Levers. Knit to the Left. Notice the stitches and the position of the needles
- Arrange THE SAME NEEDLES (EON) to "D" position
- Knit back to the right. What happened? Why?
BOTH Side Levers ENGAGED
Russel Levers NOT engaged
The needles that were in "B" position SLIP
The needles that were in "D" position KNIT AND are returned to "B" position
"B" needles slip - "D" needles knit (and return to "B")
Notice the 2 slipped strands
NOTE: To slip stitches, the carriage needs to be set to SLIP (Side levers) AND the needles need to be in "D" position.
Exercise #2 - Slip multiple Needles
- Set carriage for plain knitting (dis-engage Side Levers )
- Knit a few plain rows - end with carriage on the right
- Set Carriage for Slip (Both Side Levers Engaged)
- Pull groups of needles to "D" position
- Knit from Right to Left. What Happens?
- Pull DIFFERENT groups of needles to "D" position

Push carriage from Left to Right.
What Happens?

Exercise #3 - Free Pass
- All needles in "B" (working) Position
- Carriage set to Slip (BOTH side levers engaged)
- Knit carriage from Right to Left. What Happens?

What Happens?
Notice that the working yarn travels across the needles and nothing knits BUT no stitches drop either. This can be used for "free pass" to position the carriage. Why free pass????
