Cast on 20 stitches with any method, hang some weight and knit a few rows
Exercise #1- plain knitting - Carriage Setting
Part 1: Plain Knitting (stockinette)
- All needles in "B" working position
- Carriage Set for Plain Knitting (Both side levers and Russel Levers are disengaged)
- Knit from Right to Left then Left to Right (plain/normal knitting)
- All needles in "B" working position
- Carriage on the right, engage the Left Russel lever. Knit to the Left. What happens? Why?
- Knit back to the right

All needles in "B" (Working Position)
Left Russel (Hold) Lever ENGAGEDRight Russel (Hold) Lever NOT engaged (plain)

Knit Right to Left
All needles Knit

Knit back to the right
All needles Knit
NOTE: To hold needles, the carriage needs to be set to hold AND the needles need to be in "D" Hold position.
Exercise #2 -Needle settings
- Carriage Set for Plain Knitting (Both side levers and Russel Levers are dis-engaged)
- Pull all the needles to "D" Hold position
- Push carriage from Right to Left. What Happens?
- Push carriage from Left to Right What Happens?
It takes BOTH the carriage setting and the needle position to tuck.

NEEDLES REMAIN IN WORKING POSITION
NOTE: To hold needles, the carriage needs to be set to hold AND the needles need to be in "D" Hold position.
Exercise #3 - Hold all needles - free pass
- Carriage on the right Pull ALL needles to "D" Position
- Carriage set to "hold" (Both Russel Levers engaged)
- Push carriage from Right to Left. What Happens?
- Push carriage from Left to Right. What Happens?
Notice that the working yarn travels across the needles and nothing knits BUT no stitches drop either.
This can be used for "free pass" to position the carriage Why free pass?
All needles in hold
Carriage set to HOLD (Russel lever ENGAGED)
No needles knit
yarn passes across needles
No needles knit - yarn passes and may be loose and sloppy - adjust yarn tension before knitting.
Exercise #4 hold groups of needles - The basis of partial knitting and short row shaping- Knit 2 rows plain to make sure needles are in working position.
- Using the flat edge of the needle pusher, pull 10 needles to "D" (hold) position
- Set BOTH Russel Levers to HOLD
- Push carriage from Right to Left. What Happens?
- Push carriage from Left to Right. What Happens?

Carriage set to hold (BOTH Russel Levers)
Pull needles opposite the carriage to HOLD "D"

Knit to the left - only the needles in working position knit.

Knit to the right- only the needles in working position knit.
Exercise #5 hold individual needles - The basis stitch patterning- Knit a few rows across all needles
- Use the 1x1 needle pusher and push every other needle to "D" (hold) position
- Set BOTH Russel Levers to HOLD
- Push carriage from Right to Left. What Happens?
- Push carriage from Left to Right. What Happens?
- Cancel hold (set for plain knitting - disengage the Russel Levers)
- Knit across all needles
- Knit a few rows

EON(every other needle) in HOLD "D"
