Exercise #1 - plain knitting
- No yarn in the carriage
- Pull 20 needles to "D" Position
- Carriage Set for Plain Knitting (Both side levers and Russel Levers are dis-engaged)
- Push carriage from right to left. What Happens?
- Push carriage from left to right. What Happens?
Needles in hold
The needles are returned to working position. Even though the needles were in hold, the Carriage was not set to hold.
BOTH must be set to hold.
Exercise #2 - Hold all Needles
- No yarn in the carriage
- Pull 20 needles to "D" Position
- Carriage Set to HOLD (Both Russel Levers are engaged)
- Push carriage from right to left. What Happens?
- Push carriage from left to right. What Happens?

Needles remain in "D" (hold)
Needles remain in "D" (hold)
Exercise #3 - Hold Individual needles - The basis of patterning
- No yarn in the carriage
- Pull 20 needles to "D" Position
- Using the 1x1 needle pusher, push every other needle to "B" (working) position
- Set the LEFT Russel Lever to HOLD
- Push carriage from right to left. What Happens?
- Push carriage from left to Right What Happens?
Needles in "D" (hold) position remain in "D"
Needles are returned to working position.
Remember BOTH the carriage setting AND the needles must be set for hold/tuck to occur)
Exercise #4 hold groups of needles - The basis of Partial Knitting and Short Row shaping- No yarn in the carriage
- Carriage on the right
- Pull 20 needles to "B" (Working) Position
- Using the flat edge of the needle pusher, pull 10 needles (on the left) to "D" (hold) position
- Set BOTH Russel Levers to HOLD
- Push carriage from right to left. What Happens?
- Push carriage from left to right What Happens?
Both Russel levers engaged (hold)position
Held needles remain in "D" (hold position)
Held needles remain in "D" (hold position)
